Analytical comparision of the extracts from chapter 10 with the Ray Mears scene

The prose extract is taken from chapter 10 page 149 in Touching the void by Joe Simpson and the film scene is taken from 3:44 - 5:06 in season 2 episode 6 of * Ray Mears' Extreme Survival*

One similarity that can be found between this extract and film scene is that there is a male individual willingly in a survival situation. In the film extract it is Ray Mears who chose to go to a stranded island in Asia. This is very similar to the prose extract because Joe Simpson, who is a male individual, is also in a survival situation where he has to navigate his way through the mountains with a broken leg. Although he didn't willingly decide that he wanted to end up alone, he did willingly go on a climbing trip where is also had to survive.

A contrast that can be found between this extract and the film scene is that Mears and Simpson state of mind is completely different. For example in the film scene there is non-diegetic background music which is quite upbeat, this indicates that Mears is in a calm state of mind and that he is very relaxed. This contrasts with Simpson's state of mind because he is very aggressive and mad. We can see this through his use of language in this extract. For example he uses the words " pain-wracked" and "irritable". This indicates to us that is he not even close to a calm state of mind, he is rather in an angry state of mind.

Another contrast that can be found between this extract and the film scene is that Time is not very important to Mears, whereas time to Simpson is a pain and torturous. The slow paced editing in the film scene tells us that there is no rush to seeing things and it creates a very calming atmosphere. This contrast with the prose extract because he says "the night was long and silentโ€ and that โ€œ from time to time pain and childish fears ambushed my sleep.โ€ This shows us that time to him was torturous and it was not calming for him.
