December 2020

Happy Holidays!

With Hannukah beginning tonight and Christmas two weeks away, the holiday season is in full swing, although it seems quite different this year with lockdowns due to COVID. Let’s all pray that 2021 will be better than 2020. Stay safe and healthy, everyone.

Election Updates

Re-election of President Trump seems much less likely with lawsuit losses in Federal Courts. We can still hope for a Supreme Court positive outcome, but I give that very low probability of success at this point. The key races are the two Senate positions in Georgia. Those will determine control of the US Senate.

Recounts

Commissioner. The recount for the local County Commissioner race for District 5 has completed, and the winner remains Gomez Flores (D). While Gomez Flores won the county, notably he failed to win his district. That seat will be open for re-election again in 2022.

Chief Justice. The Newby / Beasley recount continues. Newby led after Election Day with only about 400 total votes across the state. After the statewide machine recount failed to garner additional votes for the Beasley campaign, she demanded a 3% statewide hand recount. That was completed in Chatham County with zero change in the overall vote count. That shows our local county votes have been correctly tabulated all along by election staff and board. The hand recount continues across the state. As of this email, Newby has gained 11 votes in the hand recount with most counties complete. Beasley has challenged individual votes in most North Carolina counties, but almost all of those challenges have been withdrawn or dismissed (Beasley filed a challenge in Chatham but it was withdrawn today). I predict our next Supreme Court Chief Justice will be Paul Newby, making a clean sweep of all seven judicial positions for Republicans.

Upcoming Events

The year 2021 is an ‘odd’ (not even) year, so county, district, and state Republican conventions will elect officers. For Chatham County we must elect officers: chair, vice chair, secretary, and treasurer, as well as representatives to the district and state conventions. Our county convention will be in March 2021 (hold the date for March 20). To be a delegate to the county convention, you must be a registered Republican in Chatham County as of January 31, 2021. Please let me know if you are interested in being on the Chatham County executive committee or running for one of the officer positions. To attend the district or state convention you must be elected as a delegate at the County convention. More to follow.

The dates for the 4th and 13th district conventions have not been announced. District offices will be elected.

The NC GOP state convention will be June 4 through 6 in Greenville. The State Chair and Vice Chair will be elected.
