In his novel "Blindsight" (or rather: in some podcast interview about it), Peter Watts makes an interesting point about consciousness:
If two consciousnesses work together over a high bandwidth channel, they basically merge into one, and the two individual parts each adapt their internal neural paths accordingly.
If you now severe the channel, you don't get back the original two autonomous halves; you get back two retarded, functionally crippled parts.
