Impact:

• Autonomy Over Concealment: Privacy is a fundamental right to intellectual and behavioral freedom, not a shield for wrongdoing. Surveillance capitalism treats human experience as free raw material; my refusal reclaims my autonomy.
• Uncompensated Exploitation: Tech companies generate billions from my data while offering "free" services. This is not a fair trade; it is uncompensated labor disguised as convenience.
• Metadata as a Total Profile: Location, associations, and routines revealed by metadata are often less protected than content. Harvesting this data builds invasive profiles accessible to third parties and governments, often without warrants.
• Opaque Data Brokerage: Third-party aggregators sell my data endlessly without transparency, consent, or accountability. I bear the risk of profiling in credit, employment, and law enforcement with no recourse.
• Algorithmic Manipulation: Surveillance enables predictive modeling designed to manipulate purchasing, political views, and social behavior. These algorithms prioritize profit over human welfare, undermining informed choice.
• Systemic Security Risk: Centralized data repositories are inevitable targets for breaches. I refuse to accept the risk of exposure created by corporate data hoarding.
• Erosion of Legal Protections: Government access to commercial data bypasses Fourth Amendment constitutional safeguards. Once data exists commercially, legal protections against unreasonable searches and seizures vanish.
• Chilling Effect on Liberty: Awareness of monitoring forces self-censorship and limits exploration, degrading intellectual freedom and democratic participation.

This refusal is not anti-technology or unusual; it is a demand for systems that respect human dignity and a free society. Until genuine consent and robust privacy are standard, I will minimize my digital footprint and reject any service built on extractive data practices. Privacy is liberty.
