Psalm 3 (many foes)

A Psalm of David, when he fled from his son Absalom.

1 O LORD, how many are my foes! Many are rising against me; 2 many are saying to me, “There is no help for you in God.” Selah.

3 But you, O LORD, are a shield around me, my glory, and the one who lifts up my head. 4 I cry aloud to the LORD, and he answers me from his holy hill. Selah.

5 I lie down and sleep; I wake again, for the LORD sustains me. 6 I am not afraid of ten thousands of people who have set themselves against me all around.

7 Rise up, O LORD! Deliver me, O my God! For you strike all my enemies on the cheek; you break the teeth of the wicked. 8 Deliverance belongs to the LORD!

May your blessing be on your people! Selah.

Psalm 14 (Fools say) (compare ψ53)

To the leader. Of David.

1 Fools say in their hearts, “There is no God.” They are corrupt; they do abominable deeds; there is no one who does good.

2 The LORD looks down from heaven on humanity to see if there are any who are wise, who seek after God. 3 They have all gone astray; they are all alike perverse; there is no one who does good, no, not one.

4 Have they no knowledge, all the evildoers who eat up my people as they eat bread and do not call upon the LORD?

5 There they shall be in great terror, for God is with the company of the righteous. 6 You would confound the plans of the poor, but the LORD is their refuge.

7 O that deliverance for Israel would come from Zion! When the LORD restores the fortunes of his people, Jacob will rejoice; Israel will be glad.

Ψ53 Text

To the leader: according to Mahalath. A Maskil of David.

1 Fools say in their hearts, “There is no God.” They are corrupt; they commit abominable acts; there is no one who does good.

2 God looks down from heaven on humanity to see if there are any who are wise, who seek after God.

3 They have all fallen away; they are all alike perverse; there is no one who does good, no, not one.

4 Have they no knowledge, those evildoers, who eat up my people as they eat bread and do not call upon God?

5 There they shall be in great terror, in terror such as has not been. For God will scatter the bones of the ungodly; they will be put to shame, for God has rejected them.

6 O that deliverance for Israel would come from Zion! When God restores the fortunes of his people, Jacob will rejoice; Israel will be glad.

Psalm 82 (Divine Council)

A Psalm of Asaph.

1 God has taken his place in the divine council; in the midst of the gods he holds judgment: 2 “How long will you judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked? Selah.

3 Give justice to the weak and the orphan; maintain the right of the lowly and the destitute. 4 Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.” 5 They have neither knowledge nor understanding; they walk around in darkness; all the foundations of the earth are shaken.

6 I say, “You are gods, children of the Most High, all of you; 7 nevertheless, you shall die like mortals and fall like any prince.”

8 Rise up, O God, judge the earth, for all the nations belong to you!
