I've just understood something I should have known long ago. Not only did the moron plutocrats misread SF as science, and dystopias as utopias: they thought the villains were the heros:

Ash: You still don't understand what you're dealing with, do you? The perfect organism. Its structural perfection is matched only by its hostility.
Lambert: You admire it.
Ash: I admire its purity. A survivor, unclouded by conscience, remorse, or delusions of morality.

If you think putting up lots of flags, of any kind, is a fine, normal, inclusive thing to do, then you should probably spend a little more time looking at the kinds of countries where that that tended to happen. But of course the people putting up flags don't think it's normal or inclusive, because they don't like normal or inclusive.
