Preaching calendars are necessary and helpful for the preacher.

We were not taught this.

Preaching calendars are especially needed when you have multiple preachers.

Decide ahead of time what to preach.

You'll avoid so many problems.

Planning is not evil. Being prepared, being wise, being efficient, we are in other parts of our lives.

Everyone uses a calendar. Pastors should be at least as organized.

Some pastors start with the calendar year and fill it with books and sections to preach. We start with what we want to preach, and fill as much time as it takes.

Of course, emergencies are not planned. But don't live your life like it's an emergency.

There can be time set for proper occasional preaching.
Example: church officer elections. The series was on means of grace, elders, and deacons.

Simply planning over a year ahead of time is so helpful.

You don't have to stress about what to preach for the next year or even 2. It will save you work and effort.

Having a preaching calendar will help pastors in one of the most neglected steps in sermon preparation:
Outlining the whole book of the Bible to be preached.

You need the whole to understand the details. Yet most pastors don't outline the whole book, and don't understand the whole structure.

A preaching calendar will give you the big picture of whole books of the Bible, because you have divided them into preaching portions.

The whole is related to the details. Are you understanding each sermon text in relation to the whole book?

A preaching calendar will compel you to do your whole-book study. That's just good hermeneutics.

A preaching calendar is a good indicator of responsible study.

The congregation will be more confident in you, because they know you have planned.

Let them know where you are going and exactly how long it will take. Announce the next book ahead of time.

Some pastors don't make a preaching calendar because they are too busy with unnecessary work, or because they lack confidence in their ability.

Learn how helpful a preaching calendar is. Do it.
