1 Point Preacher
Episode 16

Show Notes:

What is the point of a sermon title?

Almost every preacher uses them, but is it a good idea? Is it necessary? Is it helpful?

Assuming the pastor wants to be understood, they think that being catchy, creative is okay, or even necessary.
So that people will want to listen and remember.

That has to do with knowing your text, audience, being clear and easily understood. Not about sermon titles.

Something was forgotten when the title is not seen in the Word of God.

When talking about a sermon title, most people think it's the point of the sermon.

Something for the creative team to put on a graphic for the website.

What use is a sermon title if it cannot lock down specifically the sermon text?

A title done correctly is, or reflects, the sermon point.

Who is making the sermon titles?

Some sermon titles are childish and frivolous.
Many pastors try to be like motivational speakers.
Many pastors want to go trending.

We have disagreed with sermon titles because they were purely to grab attention; clever or well-known phrases. Which brings baggage.
Song lyrics, movie titles, nursery rhymes, catch phrasesโ€”do nothing to elucidate the text.
Just a title, having nothing to do with the sermon.

Worst case: starting with a title and making a sermon for it.

[Sermon title] Part 1
Next week, Part 2
Can you preach half a sermon?
No, each sermon is a unit.

What's the use of a sermon title when a sermon point is what should do the job. Represent and apply the text.

There are preachers that do sermon titles better than everyone else. The best it can be: a reflection of the exegetical point.
But every skilled preacher will also have a proposition: the sermon point.

Why both a title and proposition?
Title: tell people about the text.
Proposition: point of the text with application.
That's redundancy.

A sermon point does the job. Titles are unnecessary.
Maybe purely for social media purposes.

If the sermon title is the point of the text, you don't need it.
It's not good enough, because it leaves out application.
That's achieved by the sermon point.

  1. Sermon titles are unnecessary.
  2. If you do it well, you don't need it.

People don't need the title to remember the sermon. Preaching is the meaning of the text plus application.
A sermon point is both.
