Show Notes:
Another level of text selection:
The occasional sermon. One that is not part of a larger series.
Or even a short, occasional series (3 sermons max).
You're committed to sequential expository preaching, preaching through whole books.
So how are you going to choose occasional sermon texts?
This can be difficult. You don't want a topical study. You don't want to overload the sermon.
Respect the preaching calendar and preaching time.
Ability, skill set, and experience play a part. What's going on in life at the time—contextualization.
Example: Jude.
There needs to be adequate background. That could take 5 Sundays. But you only have 4.
Acts 17, instead. v. 1–9 are needed for context, in order to preach v. 10–15. There are 3 Sundays. v. 16 to the end last.
Don't platform preach.
Choosing between Acts 17, Matthew 9, Matthew 13, and Jude.
And planning for the following Sunday.
Preach 3 disconnected texts, or choose a chunk that will take 3 sermons.
For choosing a text in the middle of a book, how much surrounding context is necessary?
A recap of the whole book preceding is not needed.
Too much context is a common snare for expository preachers. It takes time away from the sermon text.
You'll have hiccups in the preaching calendar, emergencies will happen, or you'll be invited to fill a pulpit occasionally.
