1 Point Preacher
Episode 20
Show Notes:
Again with Joshua Bagas, after he traded the sermon manuscript for a homiletical outline.
Pastors are afraid of sermon critiques.
Critique sounds negative. But it leads to positive results.
From slow pace to faster, from notes to without notes, came from criticism around the middle of Romans.
Two things to appreciate:
- More text per sermon
- Preaching without notes
Preaching without notes has smoother flow.
Preaching from notes is slower, boring, and choppy. It sounds like you didn't study. Lack of confidence.
There was positive feedback.
Easier for people to follow.
Language is more simple.
Not dependent on the statements of others.
The congregation knows you studied and can hear the difference.
What in studying takes more time for manuscript is the writing. There's no time to rehearse or practice. Time is spent on editing.
Without notes, there is time to rehearse. As you study, you start preaching as you go.
Preaching without notes is actually easier.
Confidence level actually went up.
Before, confidence was in the notes, like a safety net.
What if you blackout? Study your text more.
You are supposed to preach a text of Scripture. Peaching with only an outline makes more sense. You shouldn't get lost, because you are preaching the text. Your text is in front of you. You are not preaching notes. If you can't deal with the text without comprehensive notes, are you preaching expositorily?
"You look like a real pastor."
Holding the Bible, reading from it.
Preaching without notes, you can maintain eye contact.
They can feel you are preaching to them. The momentum doesn't stop. It keeps them engaged.
You can even adjust based on what you see in the congregation.
It's not a self-centered approach: just reading without considering the congregation's engagement. Regardless of time, preach the whole manuscript. It's difficult to adapt.
The temptation is to include all the good statements from your study.
The point is not whether it was good. The point is: should that be all your preaching is. Like reading a research paper. Not everything belongs in your sermon.
