1 Point Preacher
Episode 29

Show Notes:

preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and teaching.
โ€”2 Timothy 4:2

In order for a pastor to do this, he can't just be copying/pasting other men's words. He'll have to internalize Scripture, study it personally, accurately handle the Word of truth over a long period of time.

This is application. You can't do that with sermons that were made for different people.
Preaching is proclaiming the Word of God to your specific congregationโ€”applying it directly to the flock.

It's tailored to you. Not everyone is the same size. In the same way, not everyone has the same problems or the same things going on. Don't you realize whom you're talking to?

The people could either be offended by the pastor rebuking sin that isn't there, or they'll like that he doesn't rebuke their sins.

Why bother to know your people, if you don't make your own sermons?

The most unbiblical sense of "pulpit only ministry"โ€”copying and delivering sermons, and that's it. No shepherding.

The plagiarizing pastor doesn't need to do the exegesis of his congregation.

The reason for the solemn charge:
2 Tim. 4:3, For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires,
4 and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.

The plagiarizing pastor won't be effective in counteracting this.

5 But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

Not myths, not what people want to hear, but the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
When one preaches the Word, it's always to be evangelism. Not just converting sinners, but edifying saints.

"Fulfill your ministry"
Like fulfilling your order. It was done, completed, exactly as agreed. Accomplishing all these pastoral exhortations.

Plagiarizing is the opposite of fulfilling your ministry. You have yet to minister. The Word has not been authentically preached.

After all this, we should see that plagiarism is a big one. Given everything in the pastoral epistles about the minister's responsibility, plagiarism contradicts it in so many ways.

  • stealing
  • lying
  • taking pay that has not been earned
  • not diligence
  • labor, giving yourself to these things
  • not authentic preaching
  • not shepherding the congregation
  • not fulfilling the ministry

Plagiarism absolutely, without question, warrants disciplinary action.
He has not fulfilled his ministry. How long, and why? Has he grown lazy, discouraged, busy with other things?
Or has he always been unqualified?
Either way, discipline is necessary. No pulpit ministry, while we figure this out.
Discipline as a brother, with the goal of restoration to fellowship, not necessarily to office.
Probation from preaching, and check his whole process of sermon preparation and delivery.

Example: doctors, pilots, engineers, and architects. They are responsible for many lives. It's more serious for the pastor. Other professionals suffer consequences for malpractice.

Certain forms of church lend themselves to a lack of accountabilityโ€”church government or lack thereof.
