For the Stoics, the cosmos is a perfect machine, a unitary organism permeated by the Logos (universal reason) which governs everything according to a deterministic principle. God, Nature, and Fate coincide. In this system, human téchne is but a form of participation in the intrinsic rationality of the cosmos.

The great Stoic innovation is the dichotomy of control, a distinction that serves as a user interface for existence. Epictetus codes it clearly: there are things that depend on us (ta eph' hēmin) and things that do not depend on us (ta ouk eph' hēmin). Depending on us are only our judgments, impulses, and desires; not directly dependent on us are the body, possessions, reputation, and, I would add, the technical functioning of the world. The error lies in trying to control that which is outside our jurisdiction. Freedom consists of aligning one's internal will with the context of the cosmic system.

The Stoics introduce the concept of adiaphora (indifferent things). Any technology in itself is neither good nor bad; it is a "preferred indifferent" if used in accordance with reason, or "dispreferred" if used against nature. This approach proves effective because it is balanced; it does not tend toward partisanship or the polarization of opinion, but exalts the individual expression of freedom. An AI, for instance, is an adiaphoron; it is not capable, in itself, of rendering the user virtuous or of tarnishing their moral essence in any way. What matters is the use (chresis) one makes of it.

If the Logos is the rational structure of the world, digital networks could be viewed as an external manifestation of this universal interconnection (sympatheia). The goal is to integrate innovation while keeping the _hegemonikon_—the ruling faculty of the soul—free from the slavery of automatisms. The Stoic technique is a discipline of assent that allows one to resist algorithmic manipulations by suspending immediate emotional reaction, analyzing the representation before granting it assent.
