Tara introduces her willingness to leave on page 191 "I just need sleep," this is a clear indication of how she is mentally exhausted of almost everything, earlier in that part of the book, she also had broken her toe, putting her into some physical pain as well and since her parents didn't believe in hospitals, she was carrying her pain. In this case, this shows projection, this is because Tara is denying her feeling and putting something else infront of her primary thoughts. Tara is very overwhelmed because of certain things happening around her, also because her parents deny what she is been through, they don't necessarily take her side in situations.
On page 195, there is a phrase that cold be disturbing to the reader, however, she ignores her own feelings because her brother, Shawn, is treating her terribly. In the line,"I feel the bone in my wrist crack," this is clearly disturbing to the reader as it could put someone feeling that way. This shows that she is intellectualising as Tara laughs on and physically shows that she has forgotten about what has troubled her, but instead walks away mentally. The chapter also encloses that Shawn broke Tara's wrist but even-through that pain, Tara does not show her emotions that she is in pain.
Reaction Reformation was an important element that highlighted Tara's character, where she tends to repeat a certain behavior such as denying the truth. She knows the reactions that her parents may give her, so in order to deny get yelled at, she denies saying the truth. 'i'm fine,' this shows that she is clearly refusing to say that she is hurt or needs to see a doctor, she seems to have been through past trauma to avoid anything to do with the doctors.
By the end of chapter, a lot of what Tara feels being in a home where she is almost hated or avoided, she still lives through it as that is what she had. 'like he couldn't hear me,', this exhibits that she has been mocked. Tara expresses her feelings as she writes them in her diary. Shaws has a reaction reformation of constantly torturing tara, however, this feeling of hate could also have been formed from his past experience.
To conclude, Tara has been through a lot of traumatic past experiences, this shows her pattern of behavior that has probably caused her to be like how she is at the moment. Her denial is shown when she works up her excuses to pretend that she is okay in every way.
