Case Study: Triage Link Work at Court

Background:
Poitr, a Polish national residing in supported accommodation, faced long-term mental health challenges and a sudden demand for evidence of retained worker status by Universal Credit. This request, not initially made at the claim's outset over two years ago, resulted in benefit overpayments for both Universal Credit and Housing Benefit. The latter caused £8,000 in rent arrears, as overpayments were recovered directly from the supported housing provider.

Intervention:
During an outreach session, Poitr engaged with a Rough Sleeping Initiative (RSI) link worker who identified an imminent possession hearing for the rent arrears. Recognizing the urgency, the case was escalated to a Court Advisory Network Triage Link Worker.

Court Day Actions:
The Triage Link Worker collaborated with Poitr, the solicitor, and court personnel on the scheduled court day. By articulating the complexity of the case, they successfully negotiated an 8-week adjournment over the Christmas period. The terms included Poitr making notional payments to the rent account, regular engagement with in-house support, collaboration with the RSI Link Worker to accessed focused immigration advice to secure EUSS status, and accessing charitable/emergency funding.

Outcome with Triage Link Work:
With wrap-around support, Poitr diligently gathered relevant documents via family to stabilize immigration status and secure entitled benefits during periods of illness. The aim is to establish arrangements to reduce rent arrears once regular benefit entitlement is gained. Gaining EUSS status ensures ongoing eligibility for housing assistance.

Conclusion:
This case exemplifies the critical role of Triage Link Work at court, enabling timely intervention, articulation of complexities, and collaboration with various stakeholders to secure favorable outcomes for vulnerable individuals like Poitr. The triage process facilitated a holistic approach, ensuring the client's needs were addressed comprehensively, ultimately preventing an imminent eviction.
