Ukraine Belongs in NATO

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฆ I think some NATO members (not all) are afraid to commit to Ukraine's NATO membership because Ukraine is at war with Russia, and they are afraid of being pulled into the war with Russia. However, most Americans support Ukraine's membership in NATO. Some Americans are even willing to fight for Ukraine to help them win this war. But because we have an alliance with most of the nations in Europe, we must work with our European allies on European security issues. I have noticed that the current US president, President Biden, won't make a decision on European security issues without Germany's support. I'm not sure why his opinion is so heavily influenced by Germany, but it is. We will not know if their opinion on Ukraine's membership in NATO will change until after the war is over.

One of the great advantages of joining NATO is that all members are protected under the USA's nuclear umbrella and this deters an attack by an aggressive nation like Russia. Fortunately, since it is our nuclear arsenal that provides this security, we have the authority to extend this security advantage to any country we want even if they are not a full member of NATO. We can create a treaty with Ukraine that provides this security guarantee to Ukraine if they are unable to join NATO. We can also declare within that treaty that an attack on Ukraine is an attack on the USA, and that we will fight for Ukraine in the event of an attack. This is not the same level of deterrence as joining NATO, but it's close. The USA is the largest military power in NATO, in fact we are the largest military power in the entire world, and we take military preparedness very seriously. A treaty with the USA will be sufficient protection from Russian attacks. The USA has similar treaties with Indo-Pacific nations that are not members of NATO such as Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand, and we can create one for Ukraine as well.

After the war is over, joining NATO would be the best option for Ukraine - they belong in NATO. But if there are members of NATO that reject Ukraine's membership in the alliance for whatever reason, the USA can provide the same security guarantees to Ukraine that we have provided to other non-NATO allies. This would be the start of a new Ukrainian-American alliance. As Ukraine's ally, the USA will help Ukraine prepare for full membership in NATO. We will help them meet any requirements laid out in the Membership Action Plan (MAP).

The USA would also do the same for Sweden, but I do not believe Sweden will require this. I believe Sweden will be joining NATO very soon.
