Border Security, Immigration, and Mayorkas' Impeachment

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ "The White House is hoping to demonstrate that it is business as usual at DHS, eager to show that the presidentโ€™s team is unfazed by the impeachment and to portray Republicans as consumed by partisan vendettas at the cost of tending to the crisis at the southern border."

I don't believe the White House strategy is going to work. A huge majority of the American people are not pleased with the DHS and the administration's border policies. Many Americans actually agree with this move by the House. Many Americans feel like Mayorkas is not doing his job or not taking his job as seriously as he should, and they wanted him to be reprimanded for it. In fact, many Americans feel that Mayorkas is prioritizing the interests of non-Americans over Americans.

Take a trip to New York City, or any other American city, and you will find migrants sleeping in trains, sleeping in cafes, sleeping in the streets. There is not a single New Yorker that has not encountered a migrant trying to steal their bags or pick their pockets - something that rarely happened just a few years ago. The migrants drink, do drugs, and smoke in public places, disrupting the overall quality of life in those places. They do not seem to respect our laws that ban this behavior. There is also a huge wave of violence and crime across all American cities. The video of the migrants attacking NYPD officers in Times Square is demonstrative of the kind of violence that Americans are experiencing from migrants. My friends in NYC have also experienced numerous instances of violent gay bashing by migrants. The migrant problem also compounds the affordable housing crisis, because you now have millions more people looking for affordable housing, which was already scarce.

I think the Democratic Party is unrealistic if they believe Americans will tolerate that kind of behavior and sympathize with migrants for very long. Americans' sympathy for migrants is waning. Although many Americans may not publicly admit it, they secretly can't wait to be rid of them, as they experience the negative consequences first hand. In fact, it's the Democratic Party's voter base that is most affected by the migrant crisis. Migrants rarely choose to settle in rural areas, where the Republican Party stronghold is located.

I haven't made any comments on the border issue during Biden's presidential term, simply because I chose to focus on foreign affairs. That doesn't mean that I agree with the current administration's border policies. I think they need to reevaluate their strategy. I would consult with Senator Sinema on border policies, a new border strategy, and new messaging on the topic. Americans want the border problem solved, but they want to know the issue is being solved in a humane way. Americans do not really trust the Republicans to be humane, because of their harsh rhetoric. But if they are left with no other option, they will start to accept the far-right stance as the only solution to the problem. Senator Sinema gets this. She's the best person to consult on this issue. If I was in Biden's shoes, I would offer Sinema the position of Secretary of DHS. I do not know if Sinema wants the position or will accept it, but this move would be the most effective way to send a clear signal to voters that Biden intends to get serious on border security and change his strategy.

The problem with the GOP strategy is that they voted against the border deal, and everyone knows why they did that. We all know that Sinema's border deal was a realistic and humane solution to the border problem. However, the GOP is desperate to steal Sinema's Senate seat, and they were afraid her deal, if passed, could help her secure a reelection if she runs. It's also no secret that Republicans voted against the border deal simply so they can drag the border issue out throughout the entire presidential general election. That will likely backfire on them. Blocking the border deal might help rile their MAGA voter base during the general election, but it's not going to convince Independents to vote for the Republican Party.
