US-Syria Relations

🇺🇸🇸🇾 We all wish for Syria to do well and be at peace, and we all hope that their new leader will be good to the Syrian people. However, I don't think it is a good idea to lift sanctions before this reformed jihadist from Golan Heights has actually sat down and talked with Israeli leaders, and demonstrated to the world that he actually wants peace. We will propose new legislation that requires him to do so before the US sanctions are lifted. This is to prevent another war in the Middle East.

If you lift sanctions now, Syria could start buying and accumulating weapons. With Russian military basses still in Syria, it will be very easy for Russia to supply weapons to the new Syrian military as they do to all of the terrorist groups in the Middle East. We should not wait until after a war has broke out to negotiate a peace deal between Syria and Israel. We should use the sanctions as leverage to negotiate a peace deal now, so that a war does not break out in a few years. We should negotiate a deal with Syria that restricts their ability to acquire a nuclear weapon now, not wait until after they are close to acquiring one before discussing it with them, like Iran. Sadly, the US government will wait until after we are on the brink of war before working on these deals as they have done in the past.

Unfortunately, the US government is reactive rather than proactive. They do not anticipate future problems and prevent them, they simply react to problems as they arise. The American people need and want a proactive government.
