Observing steering issue in car. It is a hassle. Also DigAlert process is confusing. I had a dream that I had a collection of 4-5 fountain pens. They were very pretty. Should I get a pen to keep a handwritten journal? Handwriting feels good. Time seems to blur by so fast it's almost unsettling. One reason why I might try journaling. Since I don't like forgetting things. I read about Cormac McCarthy's avoidance of certain types of punctuation in his writing style. I might try simplifying punc...

Life hack: on-screen keyboard

I used the on-screen keyboard earlier today. It was kind of fun. Instead of using a physical keyboard to type things, I used a mouse to type things on a virtual keyboard by clicking a corresponding button on screen. That way I don't have to physically place my arms on the desk to type. I thought about why I like doing this sometimes: My desk is too high At my work desk, there is no keyboard desk tray. This means that the keyboard sits on top of the desk. If I keep my arms on the desk, there ...

Do I like keeping plants?

I received some more plants for Christmas. Now I'm thinking about how I'm gonna transplant and grow more stuff. Do I like keeping plants? Let me tell you something, when I look at my plants, I think, now I gotta prune and water, and I groan. It's like cleaning the bathroom. When I see the dirty bathroom, I think, now I gotta clean the bathroom, and I groan. The difference, though, is that I actually prune and water the plants. I don't clean the bathroom. At least, not until far too late. S...

What happened yesterday?

I read some blogs earlier. Now I feel like writing a post. What should I write about? Oh, I dunno. How about a memoir? About something that happened in the past? But then I notice something. It's better that I don't. Writing about old stuff is like eating the stale bread I had this morning. Would I rather have a fresher slice... I remember the closing scene of the movie "Spirited Away." In the final scene, Hakuho instructs Chihiro as she is departing the spirit world, "Whatever you do, don't ...

What is fun?

I've been doing research on fountain pens lately. There's a lot of stuff to learn. Gold nibs, steel nibs, nib size, flexibility, feed material, body material, etc. etc. One question I found myself asking was: what do I like? Do I like soft nibs? Stiff nibs? Glassy smooth nibs? Nibs with feedback? I don't know the answer. Maybe I'll like nibs with more feedback, I thought at first. But then I reconsidered. If I used a fine nib, I would have to write slower. Fine nibs are better for more precis...

I have discovered the cause of my suffering

Some time ago, I bought a pack of underwear. The underwear came in a pack of 6, but included 2 additional "free" or "bonus" underwear in a different style. They were a lot tighter and close-fitting than the rest. How comfortable! I thought. This will help my hernia. Do I have a hernia? I'll spare you the gory details but I occasionally get a bit of discomfort in my lower abdomen. So let's just call it a hernia because it sounds painful. Some time after that, I began noticing the uncomfortabl...

Holiday shopping

The header flashed across the screen. BLACK FRIDAY SALE! it said. 10% off! But wait... There was another discount. $160 off! I did the the math. Wow, I'm saving over $200! What a good deal! One week later, I stare at the parcel that had arrived. What a mistake... I lamented. Did I just spend $xxx on... a pen? I don't even handwrite, by the way. I thought of an old anecdote that I once heard, about how in some cultures, the pen is a symbol of intelligence. If a baby is drawn to pens, that bab...

Four feet off the ground

I made eye contact with a dog a baseball field's width away. It started. "NoOooOo..." the owner cried out. The dog sprinted towards me, four feet off the ground, barking. I wonder if this is it, I thought. It was like staring down a locomotive. In the end, the dog was bluffing. They're always bluffing. Plus the dog was tiny. It ran up to me, barked a couple of times, and then sprinted back to its owner. "Sorry..." the owner said to me sheepishly, after giving the dog a stern rebuke. But I d...

I have solitude in common

The other day I was thinking about how friendships are like. The way I imagine friendship, it usually consists of people doing fun things together. There is usually a shared activity that binds them together. From there, people may profess a deeper connection, though I wouldn't know as I've never experienced it. I once heard an interesting quote from an internet guru. He said, "You aren't friends with each other. You're friends with the same drug." In context, he was referring to video games a...

They come for us at night

Lately I've been hearing the sound of an owl in the evening. It makes a diverse array of sounds - barking, screeching, and hooting. The hooting in particular is relaxing. I like to pace around in the dark while being serenaded by this invisible night watcher. It is also a little ominous. It is a reminder to prey animals that nowhere is safe, and that one is being watched. It is a reminder that one is alone, yet not alone. The owl is a solitary animal. It sits alone in the dark, cloaked by da...

What makes a good job?

I remember watching a docuseries quite a while ago. In one episode, the film crew visited a paper mill in the mountains of Japan. It was in a remote location next to a river with crystal clear water as the traditional process of making paper requires water of the highest purity. One of the employees at this paper mill was an elderly man. He had worked there his entire life. Upon seeing him, I immediately thought, "This must be the best job ever." Etched on his face was a look of pure contentmen...

End of an era

I've decided to abandon the 100Days challenge. I lasted 46 days. I thought about it. A lot of things are good, but good at the right time. When it comes to speech, or in this case, a written journal or blog, I have to ask myself, is this the right time? Let's suppose I'm working on something with a really tight deadline. Meeting this deadline is really important. Under such circumstances, it would be optimal not to think about things unrelated to this deadline. Maybe I want to think about ...

The little black cat

So earlier this year, during the summer, a neighbor hired a handyman to do landscaping construction work on his backyard. The handyman that he hired worked seven days a week, from morning till evening, doing hard, manual labor. He was a talkative fellow, but all he had to accompany him most days was a little black cat. Of course, this black cat was free to roam around wherever, but would drop back in at various points of the day. The cat soon became a familiar sight, wandering from backyard to ...

You aren't gonna need it

I searched up the term "yagni" yesterday. Apparently, it is an acronym for "You aren't gonna need it" and is some kind of programming philosophy. But more than that, I found it prescient. How did it know?? (That I was not going to need it). I thought about it. If the phrase were instead, "You don't need it," I might feel unconvinced. I might certainly feel like I need it. But "You aren't gonna need it?" That settles the issue. Cause if it's implied that I don't need it now, I sure ain't gonna...

What are friends for?

I was thinking the other day that, in order to relate to someone, there must be a certain degree of commonality - commonality in terms of views, interests, volitions, and so forth. To what degree, though? On one extreme are two people who have nothing in common. They may never become close, no matter how much contact they have with one another. On the other extreme are two people who are pretty much exactly the same. They are likely to get along very well. Somehow, though, it seems a little.....
