Unforgiving State

Consequences of an Unforgiving State and lack of Repentance (2 Nephi 5:24-25; Mormon 8:2-3)

An Unforgiving state can occur after someone is wronged. It can involve a range of emotions, thoughts, and motivations:

• Emotions: Resentment, bitterness, hatred, hostility, anger, fear, or depression
• Cognitions: An unwillingness to forgive, or altered perceptions of the offender
• Motivations: A desire for revenge, retaliation, or avoidance of the perpetrator

Here are some signs to help us recognize when we are experiencing unforgiveness:

• Bursts of anger
• Impulsiveness
• Feeling the need to make the person understand your pain
• Compulsive behavior
• Being unable to reframe experiences
• Blaming others for feelings
• Making snide remarks
• Sending passive-aggressive messages
• Mudslinging
