The role of a journalist

One of the things I have always considered about journalism is the role of a journalist in society, because what is it we do exactly?

I'm aware that we report reality based on a combination of stone cold facts and our own perception, but there is something more to it than that. As if we provide a special kind of service through our craft.

The thing is that in theory anybody could do what we do, since the possibilities of the Internet has set everyone free to be their own journalist, but the reality is that very few people actually do it.

I guess it comes down to the craft of telling a story in this particular way. It's a lot harder than it looks, and it comes with a social responsibility of thruth seeking that can be hard to carry.

Admittedly, not all journalists live up to that ideal, even though they ought to, and yes, it weakens our reputation in general.

Still, however, great journalism has never been more important to cut through the noise of the world, and I wouldn't want to see a world without it.

For me, the role of a journalist is highly individual, and within our profession we have to find our own path. Having said that, truth is still the ground principle of our craft, and it's the one thing we cannot compromize on.
