Ford and Holden Headliner Repair: What Geelong Owners Should Know

Professional car roof lining repair in Geelong and premium automotive headliner fabrics supplied Australia-wide.

Look up in almost any Ford Falcon, Territory or Holden Commodore that has spent fifteen or twenty summers in Victoria and there is a good chance the roof lining has started to let go. It might be a small bubble above the rear window, a soft patch near the sunroof, or fabric hanging low enough to brush your head. For Geelong owners this is one of the most common interior faults we see, and it is usually much easier to fix properly than people expect.

Why Ford and Holden roof linings sag

A headliner is not just a sheet of fabric. It is a moulded backing board covered by a thin layer of foam, with the visible cloth bonded to that foam. Over time the foam breaks down. Heat in a closed car on a summer day, humidity, and plain age turn the foam into a crumbly powder, and once that happens the fabric has nothing left to stick to. The glue is rarely the real problem; the foam underneath has failed.

Large Australian sedans and wagons such as the Falcon and Commodore have long, wide roof panels, so the sag tends to start at the back and spread forward. Wagons, utes with canopies and cars with sunroofs often show it first because of the extra heat and the joins in the lining.

Why pins, spray glue and staples don't last

It is tempting to push a few twist pins into the lining or spray adhesive behind the loose fabric. These quick fixes can hold for a few weeks, but they are fighting against deteriorated foam. Spray glue soaks through the cloth and leaves dark stains, and the fabric usually drops again on the next hot day. Once glue has been sprayed onto the old foam, a proper repair also takes longer because all of that residue has to be removed.

What a proper headliner repair involves

A lasting repair means taking the headliner board out of the vehicle. Trim, grab handles, sun visors, interior lights and sometimes the sunroof surround are removed first. On the bench, the old fabric is stripped off and every trace of failed foam is cleaned from the board. Any cracks or soft spots in the board are repaired, then new foam-backed automotive headliner fabric is bonded with a high-temperature adhesive designed for vehicle interiors. The board is refitted and the trim goes back in, leaving a tight, even roof lining that should last for many years.

Not just Ford and Holden

Ford and Holden make up a big share of the roof linings we restore in the Geelong region, but the same foam failure affects European cars too. Volkswagen models such as the Golf, Polo, Passat and Tiguan often show sagging around the sunroof and rear hatch, and Porsche owners, particularly with the Cayenne and older 911 and Boxster models, want an exact colour and texture match to keep the interior original. The process is similar, though prestige models need extra care with trim clips, wiring and airbag curtains.

Repair or replacement?

If the board is solid, recovering it with new fabric is the most cost-effective option and gives a factory-style finish. If the board has been water damaged, warped or broken during a DIY attempt, it may need repair or replacement before new fabric goes on. A quick inspection is usually enough to tell which way to go.
