Giving up on Proton

I have paid for a full year of Proton Unlimited and was planning a migration / consolidation of many email accounts from other services, but I have decided to put it on hold.

Three facts made me review my decision to commit to a long time relationship with Proton; two political and one technical.

  1. Andy Yen (Proton CEO) wrong opinions about political situation in Brazil, comparing it to dictatorial regimes as well as supporting X / Elon Musk in its disobedience to Brazilian laws.

  2. Andy Yen declaration about political environment in USA and the consequent disaster in Proton Public Relations.

  3. Countless reports of problems in the process of moving out / migration to any another email service. Customers are almost locked into Proton ecosystem.

I experience many annoyances when using Proton apps but I was willing to ignore them all, trusting that the service will improve over time. But the idea of being locked forever scares me; and the eloquence of the CEO does not help at all.

I will not cancel my subscription immediately as I would not be refunded, but I am already evaluating Fastmail, that seems to be a solid service with a very good reputation.
