Apple Dictionary/Calculator is Underrated

Since starting to use Kagi, I've become aware that I search a lot of unfamiliar English words for their meaning.

As an attempt to divert this portion of my search usage, I tried to use the built-in Dictionary App on my Mac. I was pleasantly surprised and satisfied - this free app installed by default is actually very much underrated!

Here are a few highlight features I've found in the past few days:

  • It comes with a few default dictionaries (which I assume depends on the system languages). For me, I have English and simplified/traditional Chinese, as well as translations between them.
  • It also comes with Wikipedia search, which I suppose needs Internet connection.
  • The search results begin to pop up as soon as you start typing partial words, similar to a search engine's auto completion.
  • The app usage does follow Apple's privacy policies, so I know my searches are not shared to third parties. However, I will assume Apple still knows what I am searching.

Another underrated app that I've been using more frequently is, of course, the Calculator, especially after I discovered the built-in conversions between lengths, weights, and currencies.

Until I find a major dealbreaker (mainly privacy related), I think I will continue using Dictionary and Calculator, partly to reduce the number of time I open a browser tab just for something extremely trivial (and the temptations to open additional browser tabs just because).
