Hi all,
Just a few brief updates with upcoming events and the like.
Class Schedule
As a reminder, I’m covering class for my sifu this coming Saturday, June 7. If anyone wants to join us, class starts at 10:30am, and officially lasts until about noon. Of course, things can always go longer...
The Next Event
We’re planning on attending the anniversary for our sister school in Montgomery County, MD the weekend of July 11-13, 2025. The cost of the seminar itself is $175, plus $50 for the main dinner (presumably on July 12). The cost of accommodations is to be determined once some more research is done (thank you, Amanda).
As of now, the plan is to leave Richmond in the late morning or early afternoon on Friday (July 11). We’ll stay at least through Sunday the 13th. Larry has volunteered to drive, and has enough space for all of us.
A couple things still need to be decided:
- Where we stay. We will find a couple options, then we can decide which is the best fit based on cost, location, etc.
- When to return to Richmond. The options here would be to either (1) check out of wherever we stay on Sunday morning, go to at least some of the seminar on Sunday, and then drive back that evening, or (2) spend Sunday night up there as well, heading back Monday morning. The drive is about three hours.
If you want to go, please let me know, and be sure to register on the event page (payment for the event is done there as well).
Wednesdays
As I’ve mentioned, I hope to add Wednesday classes soon. However, I won’t be able to do that reliably until at least late August.
In the meantime, I have a proposal. I know we all wish we could practice more, but it’s difficult to do by yourself. To that end, I think it’d be a good idea to organize a regular Zoom forms session on Wednesdays (presumably at noon, although it doesn’t have to be). If there’s interest, we should be able to set up a recurring meeting via Zoom that doesn’t require any one person’s intervention.
This would not be a “regular” class, but would instead just be a way to get together and play forms without having to do it in isolation. I know for myself, having a group (even if it’s via a video call) can really help train better and longer than I could do entirely by myself. I wouldn’t be able to make it every week, and there wouldn’t be any more obligation for this than any other class. But if you think it’d be helpful, please let me know and we can set it up.
Doing a newsletter like this is an experiment, so we’ll see if it works. The site I’m currently using allows you to subscribe via e-mail, so you can get notifications whenever I send out a new one. I doubt this will be a super-frequent occurrence, but we’ll just have to see how this works out. These posts have to be public (and connected to my account) for the subscription feature to work, but they are not listed on the site’s feed or anything. Still, assume that anything you post here (such as reactions or anything in the guestbook) are entirely public.
