2022-02-23 Chapter 21 - Migration

migration-001; The {{c1::Snow}} Family is a set of secure applications that provide petabyte-scale data collection and processing solutions at the edge and migrate large-scale data into and out of AWS. They offer built-in computing capabilities, enabling customers to run their operations in remote locations that do not have data center access or reliable network capability.

migration-002; The {{c1::Snowcone}} offers 8TB of storage, 4GB of memory and 2 vCPUs. It offers IoT sensor integration.

migration-003; {{c1::Snowball Edge}} offers between 48TB and 81TB in storage. Comes in Storage, Compute and GPU flavors with varying amounts of CPU and RAM.

migration-004; {{c1::Snowmobile}} offers 100PB of storage to support exabyte scale data center migration.

migration-005; The Snow Family also works for data migrating {{c1::out of AWS}}.

migration-006; Turnaround using the Snow Family is around {{c1::1 week}}.

migration-007; {{c1::Storage Gateway}} is a hybrid cloud storage service that helps you merge on-premises resources with the cloud. It can help with a one-time migration or a long-term pairing of your architecture with AWS.

migration-008; {{c1::File Gateway}} is a type of Storage Gateway. It uses an NFS or SMB mount and allows you to split storage between on-prem and S3 according to different schemes.

migration-009; {{c1::Volume Gateway}} is a type of Storage Gateway. It uses an iSCSI mount and allows you to migrate system disks to EBS.

migration-010; {{c1::Tape Gateway}} is a type of Storage Gateway that allows you to extend on-prem tape devices.

migration-011; {{c1::AWS DataSync}} is an agent-based solution for migrating on-premises storage to AWS. It allows you to easily move data between NFS and SMB shares and AWS storage solutions. It can connect to S3, EFS or FSx for Windows File Server.

migration-012; AWS DataSync does not require an agent when transferring between AWS storage services {{c1::in the same AWS account}}.

migration-013; AWS DataSync is useful for a {{c1::one-time migration}}, while Storage Gateway is more suitable for {{c1::continuous synchronisation}} in a {{c1::hybrid}} architecture.

migration-014; {{c1::AWS Transfer}} Family allows you to easily move files in and out of S3 or EFS using SFTP, FTPS or FTP. It's useful for swapping out legacy endpoints using these protocols. FTP is only supported within the VPC and not across the public internet for security reasons.

migration-015; {{c1::AWS Migration Hub}} gives you a single place to track the progress of application to migration to AWS. It integrates with Server Migration Service and Database Migration Service.

migration-016; {{c1::Server Migration Service}} allows you to schedule copies from on-prem VMware architectures and convert them to AMIs.

migration-017; {{c1::Database Migration Service}} allows you to process Oracle or SQL Server databases and run them through a AWS Schema Conversion Tool and output them to an AMazon Aurora Database.

migration-018; {{c1::Discover Agent}} is a tool you can install on VMs or physical servers to map your architecture ahead of a migration.
