Opinion on Boghossian's arguments

I align with Boghossian's argument of illiberalism, in the sense that restricting certain sensitive, contentious topics has created a repressive culture. Opinions of Boghossian that deviate from the general politically correct ideology or those that may create backlash, are being condemned by Portland university. Not only opinions, but discussions in general that surround these controversial topics. I think this is an extremely constraining environment that prevents students from intellectual thinking and freedom of expressing each ones perspectives. The conflict between different perspectives has a greater benefit coming out of a discussion- which is understanding the other side of the argument. Microagression and cancel culture- I believe are rather inflated. These concepts prevent us from speaking freely without the fear of offending someone in the room.

I understand the idea that some conversations may be emotionally sensitive to certain groups of people because of their culture, background and experiences. So, I think providing trigger warnings to students may make sense but it also could have a counter-effect.

Overall, I think the ability to hear the opposing side is what stimulates thinking and understand where other individuals are coming from. Like Boghossian says I agree that having "messy and difficult conversations" is an integral part of learning.
