3. Touching the Void: Scene from Film Analysis

In this scene, Joe is seen to have hallucinations, a result of dehydration and lack of energy. We see him visualising things as presented through the constant switching of frames in this scene. A song by Boney M. called "Brown girl in the ring" plays in the background reason being that this song was playing continuously in Joe's mind during this event as explained by the Narrator.

Visually, the scene is quite difficult to watch as the audience. This could be the effect of the surrounding Joe is in. His surroundings are just rocks with nothing unique about it. The colour of the background is dull and gloomy which puts more emphasis on Joe who is wearing more distinctive colours. The rocks and the dull and gloomy background also reflects Joe's situation of that he is trapped in his own mind due to the lack of consciousness with no hopes of ever escaping this situation.

The background music is the song by Boney M. which has a significant meaning to the scene as said earlier. Nevertheless it has an effect on the scene too then just being the song that kept on playing in Joe's mind. The song is more upbeat and catchy while the event isn't cheerful at all or something to be happy about. This contrast in moods makes the scene even more chaotic and uncomfortable to watch for the audience
