4. Film scene Analysis 2

Outline two ways in which the director conveys Joe’s desperation

Film scene: 47:00 - 49:50

In this scene, Joe is scene to have fallen into the crevasse which is depicted by the different shots of the crevasse, we are shown in the scene while the actual Joe Simpson does a voice-over giving us more context of what is happening.

The scene uses a lot of sound effects and visuals to show Joe's panic as he is all alone with no possibility of survival. For example, we can hear him breathe heavily which is a diegetic and synchronous sound. He is also shown to be hitting the ice wall he is leaning against, which you can hear clearly. These sounds make the scene more realistic and depth to the actions taken by the character which also shows his desperation.

There isn't much dialogue other than Joe shouting and swearing. You can hear the words echo in the scene as he does it. The echoing of noises indicates that he is all by himself with no one to help him. The scene also has some background noises which make the scene much more chaotic and not comforting at all.

At the end of the scene, you can also hear Joe's voice break after the shouting and swearing, which gives a clear indication of how panicked and helpless he feels.
