What Are Morning Pages?
Morning Pages are 750 words of free writing, typically done each day. The blogger has made a habit of writing them daily, a process that usually takes about 40 minutes. This writing exercise is known as free writing, a practice rooted in stream-of-consciousness expression. Imagine a line running from the mind to the hand, through the pen, and onto the page—the words flow along that path, unfiltered and uninterrupted.
How many years have you been writing them?
At least the past ten years—possibly even longer.
Why do you write Morning Pages?
In the blogger’s household, conversation is rare. Morning Pages help fill that silence, becoming a kind of dialogue with and for the blogger. Over time, the practice has become a daily ritual—something the blogger now does religiously.
Do you know anyone else who writes Morning Pages?
Some participants in the video meetings the writer attends have mentioned that they also write Morning Pages.
Have they helped with your writing?
As someone who struggles with grammar, the blogger feels that Morning Pages have helped ease the fear of being judged. One of the core principles in Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way is that Morning Pages are private—they’re not meant to be shared. That rule alone has been liberating.
Is it better to handwrite them or type them?
When Cameron wrote her handbook, handwriting was more common. Other guides, like Writing Without a Parachute, suggest that the method doesn’t matter. Typing can certainly be faster, but the choice depends on what feels most natural to the writer.
How does someone begin writing Morning Pages?
Starting is simple: just write three pages, or about 750 words. That said, having a guidebook—like The Artist’s Way—can provide motivation and structure, especially in the beginning.
Is it necessary to read Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way?
Cameron’s program is spiritual in nature, and it may not resonate with everyone. In the blogger’s opinion, her tone can come across as bossy or, at times, less than sensible. Still, the essence of her message helped the blogger establish a lasting daily writing habit
