1 Point Preacher
Episode 32

Show Notes:

A special series of 1 Point Preacher, to commemorate the 504th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation.

The Reformers were pastors. They were preachers of the Word.

"I will constrain no man by force, for faith must come freely without compulsion. Take myself as an example. I opposed indulgences and all the papists, but never with force. I simply taught, preached, and wrote Godโ€™s Word; otherwise I did nothing. And while I slept, or drank Wittenberg beer with my friends Philip and Amsdorf, the Word so greatly weakened the papacy that no prince or emperor ever inflicted such losses upon it. I did nothing; the Word did everything."
โ€”Martin Luther

"The great Reformation was emphatically a reformation of the pulpit in this particular, and a revival of expository preaching."
โ€”R.L. Dabney

If Reformation was going to happen, then preaching needed to be restored to its rightful place.

The Reformation was not just about theology, but about the ministry of the Word and church government.
Medieval worship was theater.

Martin Luther:
"Therefore, when Godโ€™s Word is not preached, one had better neither sing nor read, or even come together."
โ€”Lawson, The Heroic Boldness of Martin Luther loc. 597

Naturally, reform needed to begin with the pulpit.

"[Luther] believed that the word of God must first convince people, and then the rotten old structures would collapse. It was exactly what he had stood for before the emperor, that it is the Scriptures that must drive and dictate thought and practice. As a result, Luther never believed that he should devise any great programme for spreading the Reformation. He simply wanted to unleash the word of God, and let that do all the work."
โ€”Reeves, Unquenchable Flame pg. 56

Sola Scriptura was the formal principle of the Reformation. That relates to method. How was Reformation to be accomplished? By Scripture alone.
