Misery Loves Company

I listened to a guy tell some stories from his past today.

It struck me how similar they were to many of my own experiences.
So why was he the one standing in front of a room full of strangers?

Because he had the courage to be vulnerable.

To share the peaks and valleys he had traversed, in hopes of encouraging and inspiring someone. And it was working.

For the moment, the old cliché, “Misery loves company” rings a little different than usual.
It doesn’t have the negative connotation of dragging someone down to your level. Instead, I hear a more empathetic tone. It feels more like someone has stopped to sit down next to me in the dirt. For just a second.

That company in a season of misery, the voice saying “Hey, I’ve been there”

That’s the kind of company one in misery absolutely loves to have.

Because in time, this too shall pass.

And the cold, dark valley will give way to warm, open sunlight
A peak, a meadow, the summit… who knows?

The trail is different for everyone, but we’re all on the same mountain.
