Drone Mounted Skyscopes
January 19, 2026•330 words
To watch the sky from a hilltop is great experience.
That grandeur of that experience can be dissected into the following aspects.
- You see the full expanse of the sky. North star and those stars on the horizon we usually miss from our courtyard are all in attendance.
- To see the sun rising or the sun setting from a hilltop is often heavenly. The play of colours on the horizon before and after sunset/rise is of indescribable beauty. The colours change every second; if there something to which you lose yourself, it is this!
- The sky is often clearer at an altitude as there is a smaller slice of polluted air above/in front of you.

What if you can see that same magic from the comfort of your courtyard?!
Yes, this is potentially possible now, with the use of a drone.
If you have drone that can climb a mere 120 meters, it is as good as you are atop a building that is 40 stories high.
If you have a First Person View(FPV) drone with a decent camera and the minimal ground station set up, you have the hilltop sky ready right in your courtyard (Most of the FPV drones available are configured to look down rather than up and it may require some mild tweaking to make it a 'Skyscope').
Note that this can be a radio controlled wireless system or even a simpler wired system using a Fibre Optic Drone model.
We can call these tools 'Drone Mounted Skyscopes'(DMS).
The technical details of this can be worked out without much effort and you probably can set up this
with the tools available in the market with less than 20,000 Rupees. With more users, price may even come much lower than this.
When using drones, we must take care to follow the regulations by the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and other authorities as applicable.
