Finding a cure for "marketing brain"

Being a marketer provides me with an enormous outlet for exercising my creativity. With nothing more than a laptop and a WiFi connection, I can make money.

But there's a hidden cost that comes with tapping into my creativity so often. It's hard to turn off my "marketing brain" outside of work.

I couldn't find a definition on Google, but when you have "marketing brain", you constantly view everything as either creative inspiration for a campaign, blog post, brand story, etc.

This constant mental "noise" makes it hard to be mentally present with family and friends. And I'm not the only one who struggles with this:

Disclaimer: If you become a marketer, your marketing brain doesn't turn off on weekends or after work. - Daniel Murray, Marketing Ops leader at Clearbit

And another...

Marketing is a whole lot of mental work. Once you get into marketing..
Your (marketing) brain never takes a holiday. - Bruno Nwogu, Marketing Nerd & Coach

To find a cure for this chronic affliction of ideas, I am going to take the following steps:

  • Limit my personal use of social media to weekends (Saturdays): This includes posting, commenting, liking, seeing what others send me, etc.

  • Writing every day for 30 to 60 minutes: If I never express my ideas, they will "clog" up my brain and make it harder to be creative, productive, and present.

  • Put all newsletters and blogs I read into Feedbin: Having newsletters arrive in my inbox distracts me from my workday by filling my head with new ideas that I must think about...

  • Clean out "saved items" on my social platforms and save links to my personal note-taking app: This will centralize my ideas and prompts so I'm never dry on ideas, but also reduce the need for me to open social media apps.
