We Need More Security Communities

🇺🇸 I don't think NATO should go global. I think the liaison office in Tokyo is a great idea, but the calls for NATO to become a global organization are not. NATO has their hands full with the North Atlantic region, and NATO should remain focused on the North Atlantic region. There is a war in Europe and we have a few rogue NATO allies, but NATO is still a very successful security community. Expanding NATO's focus to the entire world, however, would make it less successful. Imagine how difficult the accession process would be for new members if NATO was global.

I think we need to establish a new security community for the Indo-Pacific - the Indo Pacific Treaty Organization. The USA is committed to the security of our non-NATO allies in the Indo-Pacific as well, and they are also facing new challenges and threats. We must create a separate treaty organization for that region. Each security community must remain focused on the security of the geographic region it represents, but they can and they should collaborate with each other. I think it's great that our allies in the Indo-Pacific are attending the NATO summit, and a NATO liaison office in Tokyo will provide opportunities for the two regions to collaborate on security threats. But that won't be enough to secure the Indo-Pacific. We must establish a security community for the Indo-Pacific region as well, so that we can maintain focus on the threats in both the North Atlantic and the Indo-Pacific. Some countries are located in both regions, and so they may become members of both security communities if they would like to be.

Ultimately, I would like the USA to create several new security communities similar to NATO: one for the Indo-Pacific, one for Africa, and one for the Americas.
