The Presidential Muzzle Act

🇺🇸 President Trump needs to stop fighting with US allies. Trump's threats towards allies are not having the effect he desires. Threatening to not honor Article 5 or to create tariff wars with allies is causing alarm and fear throughout Europe and elsewhere. Trump claims his threats are meant to encourage Europe to spend more on defense, but the reality is that Russia's war in Ukraine is causing Europe to spend more on defense. Trump's threats are only creating fear throughout Europe that the USA is not a reliable partner, and therefore they can not rely on us for weapons, energy, or anything else. Trump is going to cause serious damage to our relationships and our security architecture if he continues with this unprofessional behavior.
Trump is also threatening to annex a territory that belongs to a friendly allied nation for national security purposes, essentially proclaiming to the world that the USA is no different than Russia. He's destroying our coalition in Europe by claiming he is not opposed to behaving like Russia. This was clearly a communication blunder, as the USA would never do such a thing, but it still caused alarm. Trump is not helping Americans at all with this rhetoric.
Liberals propose the Presidential Muzzle Act or new legislation that would require any US president's social media posts to be pre-approved by the White House press department. We suggest that all of the president's talks with the press be scripted and pre-approved by the White House press department as well. The president of the United States is a representative of the American people, and therefore his rhetoric must be pre-approved by the American people. Clearly the White House press department is aligned with the president, so we would not be silencing the president. We would simply be forcing the president to think through his comments, run his strategy by his advisers, and let a communication professional shape his language before making public comments.
We suggest the Republican Party talks to the president first, but if he refuses to willingly change his communication habits, then we recommend new legislation that requires him to do so.
