Movies and books used to be the favourite passtimes. While the latter is a personal choice and involvement, and still continues, the other was looked forward to as an occasion right from the college days when we all went in a large group. The long walk through acres of public park that formed the city centre never looked tiring. Though we split into smaller groups on the way to facilitate movement, there used to be common jokes and observations enroute that involved all. A break for coffee and snacks at a favored joint was a routine if time allowed, otherwise it was straight to the theater to schedule it for later. It used to be fun, but only that such moments never last, but leave an impression that we still cherish and recall when bumping into an old mate. We all have to move forward in life forming new habits and acquaintances which we get adapted to pretty fast. If you are lucky, you become a part of similar camaraderie even in the changed setups.
Talking of movies, many of us have a liking for those black and white ones that carry you back to times when you weren't yet born. The story, pristine photography, treatment, locales with buildings that are now gone, and the tight narrative that compresses so much in ninety minutes or less gives you the satisfaction of time well spent, than watching most of the present that seem like an extended or series of Ads with fast cutting, special effects forming the backbone.
There are umpteen of the period that you never get bored with. To mention a few, "Going my way", "Twelve Angry men" and so on, many of the noir genre, not to forget early Hitchcock's. I have seen some who are allergic to B/W format, some even considering it a bore. It's all on how view an art form...
