One downside of smartphones is the convenience that doesn't need you to remember anything. It's all there to appear at a mere tap. Unlike with the ancestral landline phones that, though didn't demand, required you to remember and dial most contacts off hand. Except our own and a few of the family, we hardly recollect those other digits these days.
In fact, a few such which encouraged you to do something have kind of disappeared. When we were young, a bank used to give away free piggy banks to customers. With many of our friends and relatives having those rectangular ones with tapered edges in shiny navy blue, and "Small change can can make a Big change" printed in golden hue, and a little key to keep it locked, we were naturally drawn to own one, but since our father had an account with some other bank, it was disappointing. Many a time those little savings did come to aid, having got comfortably added over time. Now of course, small change is hardly encountered with transactions having gone digital, and though we keep paying, only appear in print.
One other almost diminishing habit of remembering seems to be with the way we earlier remembered various TV channels while on cable. News, entertainment, movies, sports and those often viewed were quickly keyed down. Now of course, cable connections are becoming passe with OTT making its way, and even if one is connected, the technology allows to form favourite groups so you can comfortably forget to remember those channel numbers.
Technology constantly keeps us updated, trying to take away much of our work to make it easier, but in a way also pushes us away from being responsible or let us use our faculties to the minimum required, to become more and more dependent...
