"All the hedges are singing with yellow birds!
A boy runs by with lemons in his hands."

  • Rita Dove, "Notes From a Tunisian Journal"
  1. The image of the boy with a yellow citrus fruit highlights my understanding of the hedge as yellow is a recurring color which conveys an overwhelming positive emotion.

  2. The colours would be unrelated, minimising the positive appeal.

  3. The young woman finally marched down the stage with her diploma in hand.

"In the midst of poverty and want, Felix carried with pleasure to his sister the first little white flower that peeped out from beneath the snowy ground." - Mary Shelley, 'Frankenstein'

1.
Through the imagery of this sentence, we understand that Felix find pleasure in the little tings in his surroundings, despite his economic status.

2.
The effect would be drastically different if we carried a big bouquet of flowers, as that would symbolise abundance.

The rainy night had ushered in a misty morning - half frost, half drizzle - and temporary brooks crossed our path, gurgling from the uplands.

  • Emily Brontë, 'Wuthering Heights'
  1. Words such as "rainy", "misty", "half frost, half drizzle" and "uplands" use visual imagery. A word like"gurgling" uses auditory images. The words that use both visual and auditory imagery are as follows: "rainy", "half drizzle".

  2. 'Rain', 'mist' and 'frost' can evoke feelings of both melancholy as well comfort, because of the gloomy mood. If the passage would have read "rainy night had ushered in a brilliant, sunny morning", a feeling of hope and optimism would be more fitting. Sunshine symbolises prosperity and liveliness, due to its connection to agriculture.
