New Blog!

Hello everyone!

It's been quite a while since I posted, and part of the reason is that I have been experimenting with a new blogging platform! I am now on Substack https://substack.com/@vincenttran

I have been posting some week by week updates of the math REU and have started a new series just posting something I learned everyday. I will also be making a post about art that should drop tomorrow.

The reason I dragged my feet on announcing this is because while Substack has some advantages (growing platform, clear business model that isn't advertising dependent, great people on there already, some LaTeX support, comment support), it isn't perfect. Namely I am a bit suspicious of its VC origins and how they seem to be pushing social media-y features very hard. They also don't have inline math mode which is kind of inconvenient for me.

Regardless I am there now and I think I'll be there for the foreseeable future. I have always wanted to self-host a blog, but I think it will be too hard because I will need to have anti-spam mechanisms and more server features for LaTeX support. Plus I hope that Substack's business model will be sustainable and non-exploitative (i.e. non-addictive).
