No. 19 - How I listen to music

I have come to realize the key to daily blogs is to write some lighthearted posts instead of always trying to be so reflective all the time. So here we go:

I am a certified music listener (or whatever you wish to call it).
On 2024 Spotify Wrapped, I had around 194k minutes recorded, so that's speaking volumes.
And the following are the ways I have been listening to music in the past years:

1: Leave a song on repeat until I get sick of it

Sometimes I find a song that's absolutely my taste and leave it on repeat for HOURS and HOURS (maybe even for days). For example:

  • "The Sound" by The 1975
  • "About You" by The 1975
  • "If You're Too Shy (Let Me Know)" by The 1975
  • "Sincerity Is Scary" by The 1975
  • "Let Down" by Radiohead
  • "Star" by XMASwu
  • "Autumn" by NIKI
  • "Before" by NIKI
  • "Magnets" by NIKI
  • "Blue Moon" by HYOLYN
  • many Chinese songs that I do not know how to write and much more...

Pros of this method is that I can listen to my current favorite song on repeat for however long I want to; con is that once I get sick of the song I would never dare to play that song until I CRAVE to listen to that specific song. So it temporarily ruins the song for me.

But I feel like some songs (like by Mustard Service) are not meant to be listened to in repeat. I'm not sure what it is, but something tells me that some songs are supposed to be played by its entire album (such as "C'est la Vie" by Mustard Service?), as if the entire album is meant to tell a full plotted story. Then I later realized that this is the same for every single album possible (I would insert a skull emoji here if I could).

2: Make "on loop [insert n here where n represents the nth "on loop" playlist]" playlists

Extended version of the first method. I so far have six (6) on loop playlists that I usually aim to keep it under ten (10) songs each, and I make a new one every time I have a new set of songs that I get overly attached to.

They're very fun to look at later on because I can see the "phases" of life I had based on the dates I added each songs. One of the playlists is full of KPop, and another one is full of Chinese songs while another one is full of random sad songs?? not sure what happened there. Yes, I can look at the dates marked on my mega playlist, but scouring through multiple playlists with a few hundreds of songs is quite a hassle that I do not wish to set myself into.

3: Make language based playlists

Korean songs go with "kr," English songs go with "en," Japanese songs go with "jp," Chinese songs go with "cn," and Spanish songs go with "es." Then this causes another issue of some songs standing right in between multiple playlists. For example:

  • "Supernatural" by NewJeans) This song has Japanese, Korean, AND English. Are we serious. This song was from NewJeans' Japanese album, so I figured why not put it in the "jp" playlist?
  • Every single songs from "KPop Demon Hunters") I KNOW this entire show is supposed to be about KPop but none of those songs have a single LICK of Korean so are these really KPop?? Therefore their songs are in my "en" playlist.

I also encountered to an issue of not having enough songs that are in specific languages, such as French (...) or other languages that I do not regularly listen to. The solution to this problem was to make an "etc" playlist with all the songs with a language I could not actively classify.

4: Make "themed" playlists

I sometimes make playlists that share one theme. Some themed playlists I got are:

  • Math (I used to listen to this when I did math but recently I've been enjoying math more with whale sounds on in the background so I rotate between those two)
  • Stars (either the song is somewhat star themed (such as Star Guardian from League of Legends (...) or the title has the word "star" in it)
  • Blue (one day I have come to realize that so many songs that are any remotely titled with the word "blue" are just soooooo good)
  • Sleep (self explanatory)
  • Nostalgia (songs from 2019 when I just moved to the US)
  • Climbing (mostly upbeat songs)
  • Driving around (basically karaoke songs) and much more...

It's so convenient to put a playlist on a specific occasion; such as when I go climb, I would start listening to my climbing playlist. Also they're very fun to make.

Do I got any more?? not sure
