Mark begins so pointedly with two quotations from the old Testament. There is no genealogy of Christ and no account of his birth to begin the gospel. Instead we are given part of Malachi Chapter 3 and part of Isaiah chapter 40.
So why are we given these quotations? What do they mean? And, perhaps most interestingly and importantly what do they mean when put together as they are in the beginning of Mark?
