Is Hell separation from the Presence of God?
No. Because God is fully present everywhere (immensity and omnipresence). Hell included.
The confessional phrasing:
"everlasting separation from the comfortable presence of God" (WLC 29)
"cast out from the favorable presence of God, and the glorious fellowship with Christ" (WLC 89)
"A breath of relief is usually heard when someone declares, โHell is a symbol for separation from God.โ To be separated from God for eternity is no great threat to the impenitent person. The ungodly want nothing more than to be separated from God. Their problem in hell will not be separation from God, it will be the presence of God that will torment them. In hell, God will be present in the fullness of His divine wrath. He will be there to exercise His just punishment of the damned. They will know Him as an all-consuming fire."

Q. 89. What shall be done to the wicked at the day of judgment?
A. At the day of judgment, the wicked shall be set on Christ's left hand,(1) and, upon clear evidence, and full conviction of their own consciences,(2) shall have the fearful but just sentence of condemnation pronounced against them;(3) and thereupon shall be cast out from the favorable presence of God, and the glorious fellowship with Christ, his saints, and all his holy angels, into hell, to be punished with unspeakable torments, both of body and soul, with the devil and his angels forever.(4)
(1) Matt 25:33
(2) Rom 2:15-16
(3) Matt 25:41-43
(4) Luke 16:26; 2 Thess 1:8-9
I heard the common phrase made accurate many years after I considered the question. (5/20/23)
"What is hell other than separation from the benevolent presence of God?"
