Touching The Void - Rope Cut Scene Analysis

In this scene, Joe has been dangling on the rope for hours know held back by Simon and the importance of this scene is to show the turning point in this scene of Simon finally deciding to go on his own and leave Joe. We understand that Joe is unable to do anything about this problem since he doesn't have the strength to pull himself back up the rope with a broken leg and Simon also is incapable of pulling Joe back up. Simon has definitely lost hope in getting them both down the mountain and this is emphasised with the sound affects used. The first sound affect involves the time where Simon cut the rope. Before this instant the sound consists of diegetic sound which is the sound of the wind and snow blowing around. Then when the rope is being cut, the diegetic sound is weakened and non-diegetic sound of the rope snap is added to add the effect of the importance and emphasis on this decision. This is emphasised because at this instant all thoughts are focused on the rope snap which is the changing point in this scene of Simon going on his own.
