Analytical Comparison Prose Extract and Film Scene

The prose extract taken from chapter 10 page 163 and Ray Mears' Extreme Survival film shows survival in different formats and perspectives. Firstly, from the calm music and the soft sound effects in Mears' survival film displays the peaceful environment that he is in. This contrasts with the dangerous and difficult position that Joe Simpson has found himself in. From the text we understand that he is doing everything in a rushed manner, "Stumbling past and sometimes over boulders, falling, crying, swearing" to beat the watch and in the bigger picture to survival the harsh setting he is in. However at this point in the extract, Joe has come off of the mountain and is out of the very harsh environment including strong winds, snow and freezing temperatures. This is similar to the position Mears' is in, beginning with a pleasant day with a nice warm environment. We do feel the affect of Mears' being in a relaxed situation with waves, sand, trees which he isn't in much danger at all and he is quite safe in the position he is in even though he is alone but this still contrasts that Simpson is in a life or death situation where his life could be taken away during the night. The watch that he wants to beat which is constantly being mentioned in the passage makes him rush even more to get out of this danger, "I rushed but it had become so damned important to beat the watch".
