2: Identify two ways in which the author makes the description of the toad killings memorable. [2 marks]
Pilkington makes the toad killing scene memorable when writing the scene as gruesome as he felt in that moment. He also conveys a memorable moment when he adds humour comments into this unexpected scene.

3: Select two examples of humour from the text and analyse the effect of each on the reader. [4 marks]
An example of when Pilkington conveys humour is when talking about the fish bowl in his hotel room. He says "I'm not sure if they're for company or for a snack". The author has said this in a humorous way as an insult to the Chinese culture because of the peculiar styles they have. This also shows his ignorance for other cultures because he is not used to other cultures living style. The second example when he mentions a "toad massacre" which indicates his ignorance again just because something has gone wrong, which in this case seems a bigger deal in the authors culture than the Chinese.
