OpenTodoList: a FOSS ToDo List
Just a few days ago, I lamented about FOSS lacking a decent ToDo list app. As luck has it, I now stumbled upon the OpenTodoList project, which seems right up my alley. I've only spent a couple of minutes playing with it, but so far, it seems to have some features that are missing from StandardNotes: Due times: Each task can have a due date and also a repeating pattern attached. This allows for stuff like Take out the trash (daily) Water your plant (weekly) Subtasks: Each task can have an...

Here's a view that can show you all your Notes that have unfinished tasks left: { "operator": "and", "value": [ { "keypath": "tags", "operator": "includes", "value": { "keypath": "title", "operator": "=", "value": "test1" } }, { "keypath": "text", "operator": "includes", "value": "- [ ]" } ] } This will show you all notes with the markdown string "- [ ]" representing an unchecked checkbox. It also filters no...

TickTick's three types of checkmarks
TickTick has three types of check marks and the difference between them can be a tad confusing. The three types are: Markdown. They are just part of the description and have no functionality. You can toggle them, but they are basically just the string “-[]”, rendered as an icon. Don’t use them when you want to have recurring stuff that automatically resets. Check items. These can be inserted below the description. These do reset after recurrence. They are tracked by TickTick. When you tick t...

FOSS is missing a good Todoist alternative
There's a glaring lack of good FOSS or even privacy-respecting software for task management akin to Todoist or TickTick. The only semi-advanced app I know of is tasks.org, but that's Android only. If you are primarily interested in privacy, you could try Apple's Reminder app. If you activate advanced data protection, you get E2EE, which is probably the most privacy-friendly option. However, it's still not FOSS, and you ultimately have to trust Apple. Before using TickTick I used beorg, which u...

On Firefox PPA
Firefox rolled out Privacy Preserving Ad measurements (PPA). I originally posted my two cents about this on Reddit. People completely misunderstand this feature (which is only a temporary prototype anyways), and I think that’s entirely Mozilla’s fault. They do a really poor job explaining it. Usually ad networks implement sophisticated tracking, which works in a highly invasive way. They need the telemetry to watch their campaigns. Firefox now offers the option to collect a minimal amount of d...
