TickTick's three types of checkmarks

TickTick has three types of check marks and the difference between them can be a tad confusing.

The three types are:

  1. Markdown. They are just part of the description and have no functionality. You can toggle them, but they are basically just the string “-[]”, rendered as an icon. Don’t use them when you want to have recurring stuff that automatically resets.

  2. Check items. These can be inserted below the description. These do reset after recurrence. They are tracked by TickTick. When you tick them off, they increase the progress bar. When all check items have been checked, the task is completed and gets copied to the next occurrence. Check items are not visible on lists under normal conditions. You only notice that a task has check items because the task has a different icon. It looks similar to a note but not identical. You can set reminders for check items individually. When you do that, check items can appear as separate entries in your lists if you have enabled that in the … menu of the list.

  3. Subtasks. This is the tasks hierarchy stuff, where everything can be seen in the list view. Here, each sub-task is a fully-fledged task by itself. Own priority, own notes, even own check item, if you desire. These are often overkill. They all appear in lists, and the stack can be collapsed. The parent task retains its own unchecked status and will not be automatically checked off like it would after completing all check items. If you check off the parent, all subtasks get checked off as well. If the parent is a repeating task, all sub tasks get copied with the parent to the next occurrence.

Know the difference between the three. I use subtasks sparingly, as it’s the most complex and clutters my lists. I usually don’t need fully separate notes, but they can be assigned to different people, which is nice when working with a team on a task.

I usually use check items, sometimes (depending on the situation), with the last item being "▫️end” to prevent the task from immediately disappearing after I checked the rest.
