how does Fitzgerald use details of setting and imagery to establish a mood in the opeing pages of chaper 2?

Fitzgerald uses details of setting and imagery to establish a mood by using certain words to set a mood. For instance the words: grey, ashes, and grotesque. These words set a gloomy and eerie mood which makes the reader pay closer attention as it can lead to a bad event. So the diction plays an important role in the opening pages as it really contributes to the mood of the opening. The diction really is the main factor in making up the gloomy mood as there are not many other things establishing a mood. Ashes give a really dark feeling as ashes are sometimes related to negative things. Some might think if people being burned after they died and those ashes are the remaining of it. Grey also sounds dark and gloomy as the color grey is dark and not really a happy color unlike others. The valley of ashes also sound really dark and mysterious which again contributes to the eerie and gloomy mood of the opening pages of chapter 2. it sounds very mysterious and dark and at the same time maybe also scary to others. So overall in conclusion, the diction is very important when trying to establish a mood.

  • stated what the author used to establish a mood

Improved version

Fitzgerald uses details of setting trough diction to establish a mood in the opening pages of chapter 2. The mood Fitzgerald establishes in the opening pages is a dark and gloomy mood trough the use of diction. for instance parts such as the ash-gray men, or the gray cars. These parts have a dark feeling because when the reader visualises the parts it seems very dark. This really establishes the mood because the moment you start using these words it immediately sets the tone for the beginning of the chapter. The reader is introduced to this and will keep a negative tone.

I think I somewhat linked back to the opening statement and included a little bit of evidence however, I think the evidence should be more detailed and explained.
