Thai Product Review: DARS Dark Chocolate

Disclaimer: Pricing information for reviews of this nature are done differently to restuarant menu item reviews, as prices can vary for all sorts of reasons; because of this the price is listed as 'what it cost me' instead of 'what the price is'.

Cost: 48 Baht for 1 box (12 pieces, 42 grams)

Purchasing notes:
Common in many Thai grocery stores. Also available in White and Milk varieties. I am not aware at this time if the White Chocolate varient is real white chocolate (cocoa butter with no milk), or fake white chocolate (milk chocolate but without the cocoa powder).

DARS Dark Chocolate is a very light dark chocolate, but that's just fine with me as what I look for in chocolate is not dark chocolate but real, milkless chocolate.

This is that.

I always had trouble finding chocolate that I like in Canada. In fact, in Canada, it is quite hard to find chocolate that I can even have, as milk is cheap enough there that it's randomly put in all sorts of things, including in ruining perfectly good chocolate.

When I first went to Thailand I was not expecting to find my favourite chocolate, but I did find it in DARS (as it will be shorted to from here on).

Despite my bias here I will do my best to not make this a puff piece.

DARS tastes very much like this hot chocolate recipe with soy milk, even being similar in texture once it's melted in your mouth. It is quite sweet, to a point where it is intense to have too many at once. It is very smooth on the tongue, but it's hard and stable enough to not melt in your hand (unlike most milk chocolate).

Each packet contains 12 separated pieces in a plastic tin, with each piece being 3.5 grams.

For the price, that is not a good deal; however, it is not 1947 and chocolate does not cost ¢8, let alone 5. Chocolate is expensive, so I generally take a quality over quantity stance, and DARS wins that mental arithmetic for me personally.

Were it cheaper I could (and likely would) unequivocally recommend it, but given the price you have to try it to do the mental arithmetic on your own. Nevertheless I still consider it a personal favourite and miss it deeply when back home.

Also keep in mind it may simply not be your kind of chocolate, which I respect.
