October 6, 2021•134 words
In Touching the Void there is a scene where Joe is stranded in a crevasse covered in darkness. In this scene we see lots of wide open shots of the darkness and vastness of the open cave that help emphasize how alone and desperate Joe is. The other portion of camera shots are very cramped and only in Joe's immediate area. During these shots we hear a lot of rustling and shuffling and heavy breathing to emphasize his desperation is this moment with sounds we empathize with being stressful or busy. The visuals are very dark, increasing the desperation with a lack of information because very little can be seen. This scene lacks dialogue as to not ruin the moment and keep the viewer in this pocket of desperation completely uninhibited to maximize immersion.
